Behavioral Expectations for Participants in University Youth Programs

Updated August 15, 2025

Minors (under age 18) who participate in university youth programs are expected to help maintain an appropriate and safe environment for themselves and others. This includes participants in youth programs operated by OSU, as well as those who attend events or hosted activities that take place on university-owned or -controlled property.

Regardless of age or affiliation, everyone who participates in university youth programs is expected to follow federal, state, and local laws and abide by the university’s policies and safety standards, including avoiding prohibited activities outlined in University Standard: 07-300 Proscribed Conduct.

In addition to the Proscribed Conduct referenced above, the following general principles apply to university youth programs and participants:

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Promote Personal Health: Parents and guardians should ensure participants arrive in good physical, mental, and social health, ready to engage fully in program activities. Immediately report any health concerns or communicable illness to program staff.

PROHIBITED ITEMS

Substance Use: The possession, distribution, and use of tobacco products (including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and vape pens), alcohol, illegal drugs, and controlled substances (including synthetic and non-prescribed prescription drugs) are prohibited.

Weapons and Destructive Devices: Firearms, weapons, ammunition, explosives, and dangerous chemicals that could be used as a weapon are prohibited, except as expressly authorized by law or under University Standard: 07-310 Weapons, Dangerous Chemicals and Destructive Devices.

INTERPERSONAL BEHAVIORS

Respectful Communication: Abusive, derogatory, racist, sexist, or otherwise harmful language is prohibited. All interactions with program staff and participants must be respectful.

Romantic or Sexual Behavior: Intimate behaviors (including kissing, excessive touching, and sexual behavior) are prohibited while attending a university youth program. Friendships and collegial relationships are encouraged.

Harrassment and Bullying: Any form of harassment or bullying (including physical, verbal, emotional, and cyberbullying) is strictly prohibited. This includes unwanted advances, threats, and intimidation.

Personal Space: Respect personal boundaries. Avoid entering other participants’ and staff’s personal space without permission.

PROGRAM PARTICIPATION AND CONDUCT

Adherence to Program Rules: Follow all program instructions and the planned agenda. Active participation in scheduled activities is expected.

Curfew and Quiet Hours: Follow assigned curfews and quiet hours, and maintain an appropriate and respectful volume at all times in consideration of your surroundings and others.

Unstructured Time: During unstructured time, stay within designated program areas, remain within sight or sound of chaperones, and continue to follow all guidelines for program activities. Roughhousing and horseplay are prohibited.

Injury Reporting: Immediately report to a university representative all injuries sustained on university property, no matter how minor.

Photos and Social Media: Any photos or social media posts must receive permission from individuals who are depicted and parental consent if they are under age 18.
